In March this year, Apple launched Xcode, a new App Store feature that lets developers make apps that are compatible with both macOS and iOS. Apple first detailed these plans in February, promising they would roll out the beta for Xcode the following month. They actually followed through!
Though this is great for app developers and their selling power for the new Catalyst OS, it also has excellent benefits for customers too. After developers download and start using Xcode 11.4 Beta, you’ll be able to purchase apps that are compatible with both your macOS app and iOS device.
Developers using Xcode 11.4 will build apps for the updated Catalyst, giving them the ability to add existing macOS apps to universal purchases. And though developers still have the option to sell separate apps, Apple appears to be encouraging this new system.

A Unified, Updated App Store
Developers for macOS X, which rolled out in 2001, have been working for years without a centralized app marketplace. Apple’s had the App Store for iOS ever since iOS 2 back in 2008. This is when the tech giant first allowed the sale of third-party apps. The App Store for macOS is comparatively new, however, debuting in 2011.
The new, updated Catalyst App Store will bridge access between the macOS App Store and the iOS App Store. Many critics and developers see this move by Apple as a win-win situation.
Seeing as Apple is finally willing to update a rarely updated App Store with new categories, the update will impact app developers’ performances. Those coders who have existing universal app bundles for sale will get to list and compete for better rankings in a new category.
This certainly beats going against the competition in the same category that’s jam-packed with other apps. The unification of the two App stores also means that iOS developers will now be able to list their apps under two different categories.
Store Categories
A few other categories joining the macOS App Store from the iOS one include Magazines & Newspapers, Books, Navigation, Shopping, and Food & Drink. Video and Photography categories will be combined into one Photo & Video category on the macOS App Store. The Games subcategory Kids will turn into a category by itself.
Developers can create a new app for these categories or use a single app record in App Store Connect. They can also add platforms to existing app records, taking advantage of the universal purchase option.
For some apps, however, a universal purchase won’t make sense. Developers will have to consider how they intend to present their apps. Though they’ll weigh pros and cons, the universal option does represent a step in significantly unifying the Apple ecosystem.
Why Install Purchases for macOS and iOS Together from the App Store?
Downloading apps on the new Catalyst app store won’t be the first time you purchase apps that work across Apple operating systems. If you download apps on an iPad, Apple Watch, or tvOS, you’ve bought apps that automatically load across devices. It’s only now that Apple is bringing this functionality to macOS and iOS apps.
On the consumer end, downloading one app for two devices means convenience. It means less money and time trying to figure out if you can use an app across both devices.
